The deciduous forest biome is located in Canada, China, Eastern United States, Europe and Japan,
but first of all, what is a biome?
A biome is “a terrestrial ecosystem, largely determined by climate, usually classified according to predominant vegetation, and characterized by organisms adapted to the particular
environments”(Campbell, pg. 811)
The main question is, what separates the Deciduous Forest biome from the other world
biomes? The answer can be found within the biome’s geography, abiotic factors
and flora and fauna . The Deciduous forest can be found in Canada, China, Eastern United States, Europe
and Japan; or in between the tropics and Polar Regions. This biome receives about 75-150 cm of rainfall each year, which is a medium amount
compared to biomes such as the desert (about 25 cm of rainfall) and the rainforest (200-1000 cm of rainfall.) Temperature in this biome is very variable. It ranges from
a low of -30ºC in the winter to a high of 30ºC in the summer, with an average year-round temperature of 10ºC. The flora and fauna, or plants and animals, which make up the Deciduous
Forest biome, are:
Flora- Broadleaf trees, ferns, mosses, shrubs, and herbs.
Fauna- White-tail
deer, chipmunk, squirrel, raccoon, skunk, black bear, timber wolves, mountain lions, and bobcat.
