Brief History:
The Lower Snake River Dams
are just a few of many that have been built throughout the Colombian River Basin area. Dams have been built in this area
since the early 1900s which have been killing Pacific Salmon for many years. Many
nature activist groups such as Friends of the Earth and Native
American communities have been fighting to destroy these dams.
The Lower Snake River supports nearly 7.5 million salmon that migrate throughout the Colombian Basin. Dams in this area were built in 1960.
Instantly they began hurting salmon migration and are blame for the salmon’s imminent extinction. Many natives in this area, which include the Walla Wallas, who receive fishing rights
from certain treaties are complaining that their rights are being denied because of the dams.
These Indians demand immediate destruction of the dams which could cost the government billions of dollars. Also if dams are removed many irrigation and electrical businesses will be ruined.
